I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t always treat my skin with the love it deserves.

For most of my life, I washed my face with whatever bar soap was around, rarely wore sunscreen, and believed baby oil was the ultimate tanning secret (teenage me worshipped the sun). Skincare just wasn’t on my radar… until I turned 50. That’s when it hit me hard.

Practically overnight, I noticed deep creases on my forehead that seemed to come out of nowhere, and patches of hyperpigmentation that no amount of makeup could fully cover. I remember staring into the mirror, wondering when this had happened and, more importantly, what I could do about it.

That was the moment I really started digging into skin health, not just from a cosmetic standpoint, but from a cellular one. I became fascinated with how our skin functions, how it heals, and what we can do to help it repair the damage we’ve done, especially after decades of unintentional neglect.

What I’ve learned over the past few years has completely transformed how I care for my skin. And today, I want to share some of the most important things you can do to boost your skin’s natural DNA repair mechanisms. These aren’t quick fixes or gimmicks; they’re foundational practices that help your skin function better, heal faster, and age more gracefully.

Every single day, our skin is bombarded by various stressors, including UV rays, pollution, blue light, toxins, and the natural aging process. All of these factors cause tiny bits of damage to the DNA inside our skin cells. Over time, this damage accumulates and manifests as wrinkles, dullness, sagging, uneven tone, and slower healing.

But here’s the amazing part: your skin is already equipped to fix this damage. It has built-in DNA repair mechanisms working behind the scenes 24/7. The problem is that as we age (and especially after age 40), those processes slow down.

That’s where lifestyle, skincare, and nutrition come in. There are things you can do every day to support and enhance your skin’s natural ability to repair DNA damage, giving you healthier, more resilient skin from the inside out.


1. Use Skincare That Does More Than Just Moisturize

When I first started taking skincare seriously in my 50s, I felt totally overwhelmed. There are numerous products promising miracles, but not all ingredients are created equal. To help your skin repair itself more effectively, focus on ingredients that support cellular health and function, not just hydration or surface glow.

Here are a few of my ride-or-die favorites:

✨ Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

This one has become a non-negotiable in my routine. Niacinamide strengthens the skin barrier, reduces inflammation, and, most importantly for DNA repair, helps combat oxidative damage inside the cells. It’s great for anyone, especially if you’re dealing with uneven tone, fine lines, or past sun damage (me, me, and me).

✨ Vitamin C

We’ve all heard about its brightening benefits, but vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant that helps protect and repair your skin’s DNA from free radical damage. I use it in the morning before applying sunscreen; it gives me a fresh glow and an extra layer of antioxidant defense.

✨ Retinoids

I was hesitant about retinol at first. I had heard horror stories of flaking, peeling, and redness. But when I finally found the right product for my sensitive skin (SkinBetter Science’s AlphaRet is my holy grail), everything changed. Retinoids accelerate skin cell turnover and promote the replacement of damaged cells. They’re especially helpful for smoothing out the creases I noticed creeping across my forehead.

✨ Peptides

Think of peptides as little messengers that tell your skin to produce more collagen, elastin, and repair proteins. I love layering a peptide serum under my moisturizer at night; it’s like giving my skin a pep talk while I sleep.


2. Get Serious About Sun Protection

Let me say this: I earned every bit of pigmentation on my face from decades of sunbathing with no sunscreen and a bottle of baby oil in hand. (If you grew up in the ’80s, you know the vibe.)

What I didn’t know then was how deeply the sun can damage our skin’s DNA. UV rays don’t just burn us; they alter the structure of our skin cells at the genetic level, leading to premature aging and an increased risk of skin cancer.

These days, I don’t leave the house without sun protection. Even if I’m walking our puppy, Finley, around the block.

Look for something labeled “broad spectrum” to ensure it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. I prefer mineral-based sunscreens (such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) because they sit on the skin and reflect light without irritating my face.

🧢 Don’t Forget Physical Barriers

Hats, sunglasses, and UPF clothing are my go-tos now, especially when I’m gardening or spending time outside. Shade is your friend, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

I wish I could go back and tell my 17-year-old self, but since I can’t, I’m doing everything I can now to protect and repair what’s already been done.

3. Feed Your Skin from the Inside Out

After turning 50, I began to connect the dots between my diet and the appearance and condition of my skin. When I eat well, my skin is brighter, clearer, and less inflamed. When I don’t… it shows.

Antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients are crucial for mitigating oxidative stress and promoting internal DNA repair.

🥬 Eat the Rainbow

The more color on your plate, the better. Berries, leafy greens, sweet potatoes, red peppers, and purple cabbage. These foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, and polyphenols that help fight free radicals.

I’ve gotten into the habit of making a big batch of salad with leafy greens and colorful veggies at the start of each week. It makes it easy to get in a few servings a day.

🥑 Add Healthy Fats

Avocados, walnuts, flaxseed, and salmon all support your skin’s lipid barrier and reduce inflammation. Omega-3s, in particular, are amazing for keeping your skin soft, calm, and radiant.

🍫 Dark Chocolate (Yes, Really)

In moderation, dark chocolate (with 70% or more cacao) provides flavanols that boost circulation and help the skin protect itself against UV damage. That’s all the excuse I need!


4. Create a Lifestyle That Supports Cellular Repair

Skincare and nutrition are just part of the equation. Your daily habits, such as how much you sleep, how you move, and how you manage stress, have a huge impact on how well your body (and skin) can repair itself.

😴 Prioritize Quality Sleep

Your skin’s peak repair time is while you’re sleeping. This is when collagen gets rebuilt and DNA repair enzymes go to work. I aim to get 7–9 hours of sleep each night, and when I’m unable to do so, I use magnesium and essential oils to help me wind down.

Lavender, cedarwood, and frankincense are my go-to essential oils. I diffuse them at night, and it truly helps quiet my mind.

🧘‍♀️ Manage Stress

Long-term stress can slow DNA repair, increase inflammation, and wreak havoc on your hormones; your skin feels the effects. My best stress busters? Deep breathing, gentle Pilates or Yoga (of course), sunshine, laughter, and unplugging when I need a reset.

🚶‍♀️ Move Every Day

You don’t have to run marathons to support your skin… just move! Daily walks, stretching, gardening, and dancing in the kitchen are all activities that increase circulation and help flush out toxins, supporting skin health from the inside out.


Kelly’s Thoughts: Your Skin Wants to Heal So Help It Out!

Looking back now, I wish I had known all of this in my 20s and 30s. But here’s what I’ve learned: it’s never too late to support your skin’s ability to heal and thrive. Your skin is dynamic, resilient, and always trying to repair itself. All it needs is a little support, and maybe a lot less baby oil.
